At some time during his reign he decided to fortify his capital city againt further attacks. The result was Angkor Thom, a walled city with a square layout covering a surface of nine square kilomettres. Surrounded by wide moats and a high laterite wall pieced by five imposing gates, Angkor Thom remained the capital of the kingdom until the first half of the 15th century.
